DESIGN BACKSTORY

Arthur C Clark once oberverd that “"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".

This design was inspired by a Daniel & Jorge Explain The Universe Listener Questions #33 podcast dealing with children’s questions particularly the section dealing with neutron stars and Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer. Professor Whiteson advised that the simplest questions sometimes are the hardest to answer. It is also worth remembering that our technological civilization is a bit like magic. How many of us really understand the science and, crucially, the engineering behind our technological civilization enough when we flick a switch, push a button, wave our hand or soon simply think – “make it so”!? Could we repair, let alone make, our gadgets? And then we have MIT’s amazing work on self-assembling robots as discussed on the BBC’s Digital Planet!
