Today we received an email exhorting us to try a digital detox - a short term withdrawal from electronic media to reconnect with ourselves, perhaps nature and try thinking without a device or Alexa or Siri insisting on our attention and / or trying to modify our behaviour. We think, and Johann Hari writes in his book “Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention”, that we need far more than a short term withdrawal. We need to become the customer of the tech firms, not have our attention and behaviour being the product which is harvested and sold.
